WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Karen Handel issued the following statement after the House today announced its proposal to reform America’s tax code for the first time since 1986. The House Republican plan will streamline the tax code and lower taxes for the vast majority of Americans.

''Today, the House of Representatives unveiled a tax reform plan that will allow working families and every day Americans to keep more of their hard earned money, while also bringing some much needed fairness and simplicity to our tax code," Rep. Handel said. ''The standard deduction will be nearly doubled and tax brackets will be consolidated with lower individual rates.''

In addition to helping working Americans and increasing the child tax credit, the House’s proposal will drive unprecedented economic growth by reducing tax rates for so-called pass-thru companies and for corporations, eliminating special interest loopholes, and repealing the death tax. The proposal also encourages businesses to bring trillions of dollars in off-shore profits back to the United States.

“This is the most significant tax reform proposal in decades,” Rep. Handel continued. “It is an opportunity to create a new era of growth and prosperity for American workers and their families, and it will give job creators certainty to hire new employees and invest heavily in their businesses. The White House, Senate, and House of Representatives are united in our desire to reform the tax code, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to make this goal a reality in the coming months.''
