Karen Handel, Steve Penley Recognize GA-6 Congressional Art Competition Winners

ROSWELL, GA - On Friday, U.S. Representative Karen Handel recognized the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition in GA-6.

Each spring, high school students from around the country are asked to submit entries to their congressional office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.  The winning piece for each district is displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year.

"I was so impressed by the talented group of students from Georgia's Sixth District who submitted dozens of wonderful works of art for this year's Congressional Art Competition," Rep. Handel said.  "I congratulate the winners and everyone who participated, and send my sincere appreciation to all of the judges who donated their time for this tremendous cause this year."

On hand to join Rep. Handel in the presentation of these awards was artist Steve Penley, who served as a judge for this year's GA-6 Competition.

This year’s winners were:

•    1st Place: Yuzhu Dong- Sophomore, Johns Creek High School: “Jail of Hair”

•    2nd Place: Alison Hu- Junior, Alpharetta High School: “End of the Ages”

•    3rd Place: Logan Maiolo- Senior, St. Pius X Catholic High School: “Rags”

•    People’s Choice Award Winner: Kevin Cho- Junior, Walton High School: “An Undeniable Freedom

Honorable Mentions:

•    Holly Mostyn- Junior, Lassiter High School: “Hand It Over”

•    Shannon Kang- Senior, St. Pius X Catholic High School: “Don’t Fake It”

•    Nitya Tak- Senior, Walton High School: “Open Happiness” 

•    Albert Zhang- Senior, West Minster School: “The Art of Boxing: Man v. Tiger”

•    Sophia De Lurgio- Senior, St. Pius X Catholic High School: “Dreamer”

First, second, and third place winners in GA-6 were awarded respective scholarship prizes of $12,000, $7,5000 and $3,5000 last Friday in Sandy Springs.
